Press Release

White Columns is proud to present the first New York solo exhibition by Ann Greene Kelly. Kelly’s exhibiting comprises a group of recent floor and wall-based sculptural works and two related drawings. About her working process Kelly has stated:

“This group of sculptures began by taking things apart. A dissected boot once worn on my foot; the chair striped down to its minimal folding function and a bowl sawed in half. All of these objects are vessels or supports that function in daily life. The stones in the sculptures are like bodies. They have a hard chalky skin. When I carve them a veiny smooth and less thirsty surface is exposed, it’s like their insides. These different materials are made to fit into and hold onto one another. Each maintaining its own history while assembled to become part of a new object. An object dependent on its own composition, the space which holds it and the bodies that understand its scale.”

Ann Greene Kelly (b. 1988, New York) received a BFA, Interdisciplinary Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD in 2010. Her work has been included in exhibitions including: “Mending Wall”, The Pit, Los Angeles, CA (2015); “Zabriskie Point”, Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, NY (2015); “False Scent”, 321 Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2014); “Shit Like Hair”, White Flag Projects, St. Louis, MO (2014); “To do as one would*”, David Zwirner, New York, NY (2014); “From The Balcony”, 247365, Brooklyn, NY (2014); “High Spirits” Signal at Beverly’s, New York, NY (2014); “One Room for The Occulant”, Know More Games, Brooklyn NY (2013), among others.
