REGARDING GLORIA, curated by Catherine Morris and Lauren Ross
Regarding Gloria presents the work of ten emerging artists who are exploring feminist concerns. It follows Gloria, an exhibition revisiting feminist work of the 1970s. These back-to-back exhibitions explore the feminist legacy on a younger generation, and also the similarities and differences in the expression of feminist concerns between today and thirty years ago. The artists in Regarding Gloria were selected by the curators from a pool of approximately one thousand submissions received from all over the globe in response to an open call.
Jackie Gendel (New York, NY) presents ten paintings based on panels from her own comic book, “Brenda The Class Slut.” Shannon Griffiths (Toronto, Ontario) shows “Gag Order,” a series of images of television and movie stills of gagged women in a wry commentary on the prevalence of this image in popular culture. In her video “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” MK Guth (New York, NY)—clad in a superhero’s red cape—attempts to save the day for a woman having her purse snatched. The scene repeats over and over, with changing angles, characters and outcomes. Tsehai Johnson (Denver, CO) creates ceramic pieces that resemble sex toys and gynecological instruments, but are humorously ambiguous. Kathleen Kranack (Chicago, IL) shows work from her ongoing series, “Assault, Insult, Compliment,” in which she transcribes comments made to her by men, recording their location and date. Sarah Martin (New York, NY) presents a series of photographs documenting and exploring the recreational activities of a group of childhood friends from her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. These women have formed a camera club exclusively for virgins, the main activity of which is taking erotic photographs of one another. Melissa Potter (Jersey City, NJ) presents a scathing series examining the world of trophy wives and other women kept by wealthy men in a series entitled “Price Per Fuck.” Analia Segal (New York, NY) explores engendered space in her site-specific installations in tile with suggestive corporeal forms. Edythe Wright (Roslindale, MA) presents a work from her series “Domestic Archaeology” in which she examines products designed for use by women in the removed manner of an archaeologist. In this exhibition, she literally deconstructs the WonderBra. Cheryl Yun (New York, NY) presents her handbags she crafts from found newspaper images produced by the beauty industry.
About the curators: Catherine Morris is an independent curator and writer focusing on alternative art forms of the 1970s. She is the curator of many exhibitions including Gloria (co-curated with Ingrid Schaffner), White Columns; Girls School, Breneau University, Gainsville, GA; Food, White Columns; and Confrontations: The Guerrilla Art Action Group, 1969-1976, Printed Matter, NY. Morris recently co-edited An Eye on the Modern Century: The Selected Letters of Henry McBride (Yale University Press, 2000) and is the author of The Essential Cindy Sherman (Abrams, 1999). Lauren Ross is the Director/Chief Curator of White Columns.
This exhibition will run concurrently with White Room exhibitions by Ron Amstutz and Steve Robinson.
