Private Time – Walkable EP Launch Party + Performance

July 12, 2025–August 1, 2025

Press Release

White Columns is proud to present a focused survey of paintings produced over the past decade by the New York-based artist and musician Annie Pearlman. The exhibition coincides with the release of a new vinyl EP WALKABLE by Pearlman’s musical project Private Time on White Columns’ record label The Sound of White Columns (TSoWC.)

In 2016 Pearlman had a solo exhibition at White Columns of a group of then-recent paintings of abstracted exterior and interior spaces. Often hallucinatory or dream-like, the spaces described in Pearlman’s paintings are liminal (Pearlman is interested in topographies found at the edges – or margins – of urban communities.) Influenced by cinema – Pearlman studied film as an undergraduate, and she currently works as a music supervisor for films and television – the terrains in her work are as much psychological as physical: her paintings describe a state of mind as much as they allude to a specific sense of place.

In her New York Times review of Pearlman’s 2016 exhibition critic Roberta Smith observed:

Annie Pearlman’s … paintings suggest a torqued urban Precisionism crossed with early Cubist landscape. Office buildings loom over city streets, twist together or merge with interiors. Trees brandish jagged branches. There may be some figures, and some streetlights. The palette of oranges, browns, occasional hot pinks and a deep blued green, like the space within the paintings, are implicitly overheated and contemporary.

Pearlman’s paintings are presented alongside a selection of archival material relating to The Sound of White Columns.

In 2006 White Columns launched a record label called The Sound of White Columns to release music and recordings on vinyl by artist-musicians and musician-artists.

The label was partly inspired by the organization’s early history with New York’s downtown music scenes: Philip Glass performed in the space in the 1970s and 1980s; the now-legendary post-punk music festivals Noise Fest (1981) and Speed Trials (1983) took place in the gallery; White Columns’ former director Josh Baer and musician Glenn Branca co-founded the iconic label Neutral Records in 1982; and Factory Records’ U.S. offices were directly above the gallery at 325 Spring Street in the 1980s, etc. Since 2006 The Sound of White Columns has released seventeen recordings in total, with prior releases by Richard Hell/Robert Quine, Meredith Monk, Malcolm Mooney, Kim Gordon and others.
