White Columns is pleased to present the first New York solo exhibition by the New York-based artist Patricia Esquivias. Esquivias’ installation includes a number of short projected video works from the series: ‘Reads like the paper’ (2005 – ongoing.) In a typically concise artist’s statement Esquivias described “’Reads like the paper’ as “a series of short videos which accumulate unclassifiable details from quotidian situations in order to present issues which I am concerned and curious about.” Employing deadpan wit, off-kilter comic timing, and a precise, yet seemingly casual aesthetic approach Esquivias’ modest short films privilege a somewhat melancholic world-view, underscored by a prevailing sense of doubt.

Patricia Esquivias (b. Caracas, 1979). Lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, in 2007 and a BA from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in 2001. Her work was included in EAST International (Norwich Gallery, Norwich, 2007) selected by White Columns’ director Matthew Higgs and artist Marc Camille Chaimowicz. In 2007 she won both the EAST Award, and the Illy ‘Past, Present, Future’ award at Artissima, Turin. Her work has been included in group shows at the Kunstverein Frankfurt, and Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid amongst others. Her work will feature in the 2008 Berlin Biennial. Parallel to her show at White Columns, Murray Guy (New York) will present her recent films ‘Folklore I’ and ‘Folklore II’ (January 12 – February 16, 2008.)
