White Columns is proud to present in our Lobby Space, ‘Keep Floors and Passages Clear’ a project curated by the UK-based artist and curator Tom Godfrey. ‘Keep Floors and Passages Clear’ was originally a two year project that involved the commissioning of single A1 (33”x23”) works on paper from artists based in the UK and beyond.

Artists were invited to respond to an old British RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) poster situated in the foyer of the recently established One Thoresby Street studio and gallery building in Nottingham, England. Hearkening back to the buildings former industrial use, the poster now offers a renewed meaning and potential to dictate on how art is created and experienced.

Each artist was invited to produce a work that was identically mounted and presented adjacent to the original poster. This changed on a monthly basis with the former exhibitor’s poster being housed within a portfolio that could be viewed upon request. The commissioning process came to a close in October 2010 after 20 works had been displayed.

Adhering to the message conveyed by the original poster, a wall based poster rack has been utilized to display all 20 works, initially in the original foyer space in Nottingham from October to December 2010 and now in the foyer space at White Columns. They are presented at White Columns alongside the original RoSPA poster.
