YELLOW BRICK ROAD, curated by Augusto Arbizo
Yellow Brick Road features painting, photography, installation and sculpture by emerging artists who deploy imaginary characters and/or fantastical settings. These artists – all New York based – are inspired by allegory and allusion, and share a sensibility towards the eccentric and obscure.
Mala Iqbal and Colin Hunt create surreal landscapes, executed with eye-popping detail. Peter Kreider’s sculpture of a full-scale fireplace and chimney literally defies gravity. Ron Amstutz produces optically charged interiors as a backdrop for absurd photo based works. John Hodany makes mixed media works that are filled with visual conundrums. Amy Vogel’s watercolors and Michael Wetzel’s egg tempera on panel paintings propose modern day fairy tales populated with original (and sometimes borrowed) characters.
