Organized by Amie Scally

White Columns is proud to present the work of three New York-based artists, Vlatka Horvat, Marlo Pascual, and Lise Soskolne: three autonomous bodies of work presented in the main gallery space.

Vlatka Horvat

Vlatka Horvat presents a series of works on paper that depict the body in various altered forms. In twenty-two collage works she combines a pair of arms and legs that have been cut from a photograph of herself and then arranged in organic mirror image formations. The resulting ‘hybrid’ forms are abstracted yet reference the body in a lyrical way — they evoke a strange kaleidoscopic choreography on the page, referencing rorshach tests, cell mutations, human organs, etc. Also on view are four ‘chart’ works which maps a transition of a complete figure to empty space by removals of different body parts in each subsequent frame.

Vlatka Horvat lives and works in New York. Her work will be featured in a concurrent group exhibition, Cut Away, at Anna Kustera Gallery, New York. Recent exhibitions include Exhibitionism: An Exhibition of Exhibitions of Works from the Marieluise Hessel Collection at Bard College, curated by Matthew Higgs, Black and White at IBID Projects, London (both 2007) and The Beat, Haswellidiger Gallery, New York (2006).

Marlo Pascual

Marlo Pascual presents three recent sculptures created from found photographs and objects juxtaposed with various light sources set in a darkened section of the gallery. Depicting unknown glamorous women, the photographs have the appearance of movie star portraits or modeling headshots. These images combined with theatrical light sources such as candlelight, fluorescents, and color gels, provide the works with a dramatic tension: where each work takes on a stage-like quality. The sculptures become a site of convergence between past and present, fiction and reality, and drama and banality, where the subjects are recast in ambiguous narratives with psychological and melancholic resonances.

Marlo Pascual lives and works in New York. She recently completed her MFA at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia (2007). This is her first exhibition in New York.

Lise Soskolne

In her installation “Karl Lagerfeld on Canvas,” Lise Soskolne employs the auction catalog that accompanied the 1975 sale of Karl Lagerfeld’s collection of Art Deco objects as both a point of departure and the source material for a group of paintings and related sculptures. To each painting Soskolne has affixed pages from the Lagerfeld catalog, while the sculptures are created from women’s clothing and accessories sourced in thrift stores. Each of the clothing ‘ensembles’ is paired with and displayed in front of the painting that mirrors aspects of its particular colors, textures, line, patterns, forms, shapes, etc.

Lise Soskolne lives and works in New York. She is currently enrolled in the MFA program at Bard College. Previous solo exhibitions include Modern Culture, New York (2001) and Artists Space, New York (1999).
