The Bulletin Board: Scott King

Exhibition Description
The fifth installation for White Columns’ new project space The Bulletin Board – a 6’ x 4’ glazed aluminum bulletin board installed in our entrance lobby – is by the London-based artist Scott King. King’s project takes the form of a memorial to a legendary British musician who died in the mid 1990s in relative obscurity and consists of three distinct parts: the first is an installation of photographic images for The Bulletin Board that relate to Lee Brilleaux (1952-1994), a founding member of the celebrated British ‘pub rock’ band Dr. Feelgood. The second part of King’s project takes the form of a memorial bench dedication in nearby Jackson Square park (at the intersection of 8th Avenue, Horatio Street, and Greenwich Avenue.) Attached to one bench will be a brass plaque engraved with the following text: “WOLFMAN CALLING, IN MEMORIAM, LEE BRILLEAUX OF DR. FEELGOOD, 10.05.52 – 07.04.94”. The final part of the project is a special edition of Scott King and Matt Worley’s infamous publication ‘CRASH!’ – published in collaboration with White Columns’ in house journal ‘The W.C.’
Dedicated to Brilleaux’s life and times King’s project celebrates a highly specific moment in British cultural and social history. Occurring in the years immediately before punk (i.e. pre-1976) Brilleaux and Dr. Feelgood were a central force behind what would become known as ‘pub rock’ – an aggressive form of fast-paced, rhythm n’ blues music, typically associated with the English county of Essex, and in particular with the town of Canvey Island. Relatively short-lived the ‘pub rock’ movement would ultimately be consumed and succeeded by punk: becoming a footnote in Britain’s recent musical past. King’s project is part of a recent reconsideration of this seminal, but largely forgotten era in British musical and cultural history.
Scott King (b. 1969) lives and works in London. His work was previously seen at White Columns as a part of the exhibitions “Other People’s Projects – Herald Street” and “Post No Bills”, both 2005. King’s work has been exhibited internationally including solo shows at Herald Street (Millers Terrace), London; Sonia Rosso, Turin; and Issue Zero, CNEAI, Paris. Recent group shows include: “Bridge Freezes Before Road”, Gladstone Gallery, New York, 2005; “Regarding Terror”, Kunst Werke, Berlin, 2005; “Communicate: British Graphic Design Since the 60s”, Barbican, London, 2004; and “Inventory/Scott King/Donald Urquhart”, Portikus, Frankfurt, 2004 (presented by Wolfgang Tillmans.) King is a former art director of both i-D and Sleazenation magazines and he is one of the most celebrated British graphic designers of the past decade. His design projects have graced record sleeves for bands such as Suicide, Pet Shop Boys, and Earl Brutus amongst many others.
