Exhibition Description
The group of artists explored, through painting, sculpture, poetry, performance, and video the possibilities inherent in the relationship between artmaking and consumption. Works fabricated from edible substances, works incorporating the simultaneous consumption of food and idea, and performance and video installations were included. Eric Appel wrote in his press release, “By eating, we digest and take into our bodies the necessary nourishment we need to live. The true cannibal eats his enemy to possess his spirit. The artworks in Now I Know Why Cannibals Eat The Enemies will be assimilated by the audience physically, intellectually, and emotionally. The purpose of this assimilation is the interaction between artist (feeder) and audience (consumer) that eventuates mutual fulfillment.”
