James Carroll
Installation

May 7–26, 1977 112 Greene Street/Workshop

Exhibition Description

James Carroll’s installation consisted of several large raw canvas pieces which were hung (unstretched) directly on the gallery walls. The artist placed a large, flat rectilinear wood piece on the floor. A number of the canvas pieces were divided into four sections by seams of other subtle means. With groupings of four, the artist eliminated the polarities or oppositions, implicit in groupings of three or five. His work directed the viewers’ attention to what is there as opposed to a conscious memory or association. There was reference point other than the actual physical reality of the canvas itself.
