White Columns is pleased to announce that Jasmin Tsou has joined its Board of Directors. Matthew Higgs, Director of White Columns remarks: “We are thrilled that Jasmin will join White Columns’ board, to help the organization move forward into and beyond its sixth decade of continuous operations. Jasmin has been a long-standing colleague and a powerful advocate for the organization. At JTT Jasmin has created a focused, cross-generational and artist-centered program: one that is helping to expand our understanding of what constitutes the ‘contemporary’.”

Tsou is the founder of JTT, a New York gallery that has been in operation since 2012. JTT currently represents seventeen artists including Jamian Juliano-Villani, Becky Kolsrud, Sam McKinniss, Borna Sammak, Diane Simpson, Sable Elyse Smith, Issy Wood, and Marlon Mullen. (Mullen had his first New York solo show at White Columns in 2012.) Tsou is deeply engaged with New York’s art communities and has previously served on White Columns’ benefit committees, in addition to her work with NIAD in Richmond, CA, and her role on a number of committees for Art Basel.

Upon joining the Board, Tsou said: “I am so honored to be a part of the White Columns board. Two of the artists I now represent I first learned about through Matthew and the White Columns program many years ago. Beyond the personal impact the institution has had on my career, I’m very excited to be formally part of something that I strongly believe supports and creates a much larger art community in New York. I expect to be learning a ton through this participation and can’t wait.”

White Columns is New York City’s oldest alternative art space, and was founded in 1970 at 112 Greene Street in SoHo by a community of artists in an atmosphere of self-determination and artistic freedom. The organization is committed to creating a context for the work of artists – from all backgrounds – who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. Notably, since 2005 White Columns has organized more than forty exhibitions and projects in collaboration with organizations that support artists with disabilities. Over the past fifty years, literally hundreds of artists have benefited from the prescient support of White Columns, many of whom went on to national and international acclaim, including: Gordon Matta-Clark, Louise Bourgeois, Alice Aycock, Richard Nonas, Jackie Winsor, Susan Rothenberg, Kiki Smith, Harmony Hammond, William Wegman, Lee Quiñones, Peter Fend, Kim Gordon, Barbara Ess, Jack Goldstein, Group Material, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Andres Serrano, Lutz Bacher, Fred Wilson, Gary Simmons, Sturtevant, Cady Noland, Lorna Simpson, Glenn Ligon, Sarah Sze, William Scott, Margaret Lee, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Derrick Alexis Coard, Magdalena Suarez Frimkess, Aliza Nisenbaum, Gerasimos Floratos, Hugh Hayden, Esteban Jefferson, and Maya Stovall, among many others.
