Support New York’s oldest alternative art space!
White Columns

“For a space with such a lengthy history to remain cutting-edge, and to consistently be seeking out new voices without becoming repetitive, is extremely rare, and extremely important to support to keep New York interesting.”

– Esteban Jefferson
(Solo debut, White Columns, 2019)

Founded in 1970, White Columns is New York’s oldest not-for-profit, alternative art space. We remain committed to supporting the work of artists who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support. This includes emerging, under-represented and under-recognized voices, and our now 20 years of pioneering support for artists with disabilities.

As we reflect on this past year’s programs and events, we hope that you might consider making a donation to support White Columns’ enduring legacy.

In 2024 White Columns presented solo exhibitions and projects by Gee Vaucher, Francesse Dolbrice, Carole Gibbons, Rachel Handlin, and Vince Aletti. Our long-running annual exhibition Looking Back returned for its fourteenth edition guest-curated by writer Randy Kennedy, who brought together works by an intergenerational group of thirty-five artists.

In 2024 we received over 1,000 submissions to our Curated Artist Registry open call, and presented four guest-curated online exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Registry, selected by Marie Catalano, Adam Marnie, Sanna Almajedi, and Daniel Sperry and Alivia Zivich of Detroit’s What Pipeline gallery. In the summer we organized REGISTERED / 2024, an exhibition that showcased the practices of six individual artists affiliated with our Registry: Michaela Bathrick, Ali Bonfils, Joseph Brock, Eleanor Conover, Donyel Ivy-Royal and Ryan Strochinsky.

We organized People Are People, an exhibition for the gallery at Detroit’s progressive art studio P.A.S.C., and we were honored to host a presentation of work by Veronica Ryan in collaboration with London’s Camden Art Centre to raise funds for their renowned educational programs.

Events at White Columns in 2024 included a screening, talk and performance featuring Gee Vaucher and Penny Rimbaud from the iconic British anarcho-punk band Crass; a musical performance by Joseph Brock and Raoul Arboite; a sound installation by Donyel Ivy-Royal; talks by Vince Aletti and Randy Kennedy; and a publication launch with Bob Nickas.

We would like to thank all of the artists and curators for their invaluable contributions to White Columns’ programs over the past year.

We remain eternally grateful for the ongoing support that we continue to receive from the wider art community. If you are in a position to make a contribution to support White Columns’ future please make a donation today by clicking the button below.
