Dear White Columns supporter,
This year marks my 20th anniversary as Director and Chief Curator at White Columns, New York’s oldest not-for-profit alternative art space. You are receiving this email because you have supported our programs through acquiring a fundraising edition or an artwork from one of our exhibitions during my time here. We are truly grateful for supporters like you who have helped to make our programs here possible.
We hope you will consider supporting our programs again and help continue White Columns’ enduring legacy as an independent space for all.
When I arrived at White Columns in 2005, the economy was thriving and the art world was rapidly expanding. For many people, there was no longer an obvious need for alternative spaces. It was the perfect time to reimagine these kinds of spaces for artists and audiences alike.
At White Columns, the first thing we did was to try and involve as many people as possible in our programs, and that included many artists working outside of New York and also many senior artists whose work we felt had been overlooked. What we want to do, hopefully, is try to represent something of the complexity of visual culture.
Our real hope is that if you visit White Columns, each time you visit, you encounter something that’s substantially different. Hopefully, through our programs cumulatively, we have give you a sense of how art gets made, why art gets made, and who art gets made by over the past two decades. There will always be a need for artist-centric spaces, where artists don’t have to worry about the commercial viability of their work.
We remain eternally grateful for your past support. We hope you will support our future programs and essential operations again by making a donation today.
Matthew Higgs
