White Columns proudly presents Act Like You Know Me, the New York iteration of the traveling solo exhibition by Pippa Garner, after prior presentations at Kunstverein München (2022), Kunsthalle Zürich (2023), and FRAC Lorraine, Metz (2023.)
Born in 1942, the artist and author formerly known as Philip Garner resists systems of consumption, their absurd promises and waste. In her five-decade career she has created a complex body of work that encompasses drawing, performance, sculpture, fashion and photography. Her uncompromising approach to her life and her work has allowed her to operate in the fields of design, illustration, photography and art without ever fully committing to any discipline.
The exhibition is co-curated by the New York-based writer Fiona Alison Duncan and Maurin Dietrich (Kunstverein München.)

In celebration of the launch of ACT LIKE YOU KNOW ME, the first comprehensive monograph of Pippa Garner’s art, authors Dodie Bellamy (When the Sick Rule the World) and Fiona Alison Duncan (Exquisite Mariposa) discuss the archetype of the fool in mythology, contemporary art, and Garner’s practice.
This reading and discussion picks up on Bellamy’s essay “Playing the Fool,” as collected in ACT LIKE YOU KNOW ME.
Co-edited by Duncan and Maurin Dietrich, ACT LIKE YOU KNOW ME is published by Bierke Books with the Kunstverein Munich, Kunsthalle Zurich, FRAC Lorraine, and White Columns.
