Make White Columns 2024 Programming Possible!
White Columns

Founded in 1970, White Columns is New York’s oldest not-for-profit, alternative art space. We remain committed to providing a platform for artists at all stages in their careers who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support.

In 2023 we presented solo exhibitions by Philip Van AverEverette BallLolly BattyCarol BrunsPippa GarnerCamille HolvoetNa Kim, and Piero Penizzotto. We also had the privilege of presenting Barbara Ess‘s archives, underscoring her pivotal role in the downtown New York art and music scenes. Our long-running annual exhibition Looking Back returned for its thirteenth edition, curated this time by Olivia Shao, who brought together works by an intergenerational group of forty-five artists.

We additionally received over 1,200 submissions to our 2023 Curated Artist Registry open call, and we presented four guest-curated online exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Registry, selected by Mihaela ChiriacTamara KhasanovaDaisy May Sheff, and Rachel Vera Steinberg. This past summer we also hosted a two-person exhibition by Registry artists Pol Morton and Sara Murphy.

Throughout 2023 we hosted public programs that included: an enactment in Central Park by Maria Nordman and a gallery performance by Maggie Lee on the occasion of the exhibition Looking Back; an online conversation between artist Denisse Griselda Reyes and curator Tamara Khasanova; a double book launch celebrating new publications by Richard Hell and Emily Simon; a talk by Barbara Ess’s unofficial archivist Kirby Gookin; an online remembrance of Barbara Ess with Peggy Ahwesh, Christine HahnAdam MarnieLeor MillerMegan Plunkett, and Peter Scott; a conversation between Piero Penizzotto and Kiara Ventura; and the North American book launch of Pippa Garner: ACT LIKE YOU KNOW ME with Dodie Bellamy and Fiona Alison Duncan.

We remain eternally grateful for the ongoing support that we have received from the wider art community over the past fifty-three years.

Your tax-deductible* donation will help White Columns maintain its independence and allow us to create even more opportunities for underserved artists.
