White Columns
A reading organized by Fiona Alison Duncan and Hard to Read honoring the work of Sarah Schulman, Etel Adnan, bell hooks, Sylvère Lotringer, SOPHIE, and Greg Tate on February 3, 2022.

White Columns is New York’s oldest not-for-profit, alternative art space. From 1970 to today, we continue to create transformative opportunities for generations of emerging and underrecognized artists.

This year, we presented illuminating solo exhibitions by Karen Barbour, Cay Bahnmiller, Ntiense Eno-Amooquaye, Lloyd Foster, Christine Shan Shan Hou, John Maclean, Dr. Charles Smith and Sophie Stone. Our Looking Back Annual exhibition returned for its twelfth iteration, curated this time by Mary Manning, who brought together works by forty-five artists  composing an intimate and clearcut snapshot of the previous year. We showcased artist-driven projects, such as the wildly popular Ceramics Club fundraiser exhibition that raised over $23K in funds for charitable causes, and Pre-Echo Press, a publishing pursuit by Matt Connors, who works with artists to recover and realize new unlikely ideas into printed matter and records.

We received almost a thousand submissions to our Curated Artist Registry open call, and we presented four online shows curated exclusively from the registry by Colleen Grennan, Brittany Adeline King, Jenée-Daria Strand and Louis-Phillippe Van Eeckhoutte.

Lastly, we hosted events such as the all-encompassing sound installation by Lloyd Foster; a compelling poetry reading organized by Christine Shan Shan Hou; a book launch and conversation celebrating Mary Heilman‘s seminal publication, The All Night Movie; the reflective evening, organized by Hard to Read, honoring the work of artists who recently passed away; a screening of short films by Barbara Hammer; and a moving humorous performance by Otis Houston Jr. to launch his new publication, Can’t GO Unless WE ALL GO.

All of this work would not be possible without the extraordinary support from the wider art community. Every donation counts – adding fuel to the founding spirit of the organization – and helps to keep our doors open.
