White Columns
A reading organized by Fiona Alison Duncan and Hard to Read honoring the work of Sarah Schulman, Etel Adnan, bell hooks, Sylvère Lotringer, SOPHIE, and Greg Tate on February 3, 2022.

Founded in 1970, White Columns is New York’s oldest not-for-profit, alternative art space. We remain committed to providing a platform for artists at all stages in their careers who have yet to benefit from wider critical, curatorial or commercial support.

In 2022 we presented solo exhibitions by Karen Barbour, Cay Bahnmiller, Ntiense Eno-Amooquaye, Lloyd Foster, Christine Shan Shan Hou, John Maclean, Dr. Charles Smith and Sophie Stone. Our long-running annual exhibition Looking Back returned for its twelfth edition, curated by the artist Mary Manning, who brought together works by an intergenerational group of forty-five artists. We continued to privilege artist-driven projects, such as the popular Ceramics Club fundraising exhibition (which brought in more than $26,000 for charitable causes), and Pre-Echo Press, the artist Matt Connors’ idiosyncratic publishing project.

We received almost 1,000 submissions to our 2022 Curated Artist Registry open call, and we presented four online exhibitions drawn exclusively from the Registry by guest curators Colleen Grennan, Brittany Adeline King, Jenée-Daria Strand and Louis-Phillippe Van Eeckhoutte.

Throughout 2022 we hosted public programs that included: a musical performance and an immersive sound installation on the occasion of Lloyd Foster’s exhibition; a poetry reading organized by Christine Shan Shan Hou; a conversation celebrating the reissue of Mary Heilmann’s seminal artist’s book The All Night Movie; a public gathering, organized by Hard to Read, celebrating the lives and voices of a diverse group of artists and writers who had recently passed away; a screening of the films of Barbara Hammer; and a visceral performance by Otis Houston Jr. on the occasion of his first monograph Can’t GO Unless WE ALL GO.

We remain eternally grateful for the ongoing support that we have received from the wider art community over the past fifty-two years.
