White Columns

White Room Alexandre Singh

White Columns is pleased to present a solo exhibition by the New York-based British artist Alexandre Singh. Singh’s White Room exhibition incorporates three discrete, but related elements: a feature-length, single channel digitally animated video projected against a free-standing sculptural screen; a vitrine-based sculptural work that evokes – through low-tech theatrics – a Caspar David Friedrich-esque sublime; and a digital print/collage of Adi Dassler – founder of the sports shoe company Adidas - that alludes to the territories explored elsewhere in the installation.

The title of the video ‘The Marque of the Third Stripe’ is derived from Adidas’s ubiquitous ‘three stripe’ branding and logo. Structured across six ‘chapters’, and narrated by six different female Portuguese voices the video takes aspects of Dassler’s biography – and his relationship to modernity - as its departure point and provokes a slippery re-reading and re-assessment of historical and narrative conventions. (Dassler himself makes an appearance in the inverted collage ‘portrait.’) ‘The Sculptor in the Fog’ incorporates an internal fog-machine that is programmed to constantly create a sculptural tableaux that hovers between legibility and illegibility.

To coincide with his installation Singh has created a new issue of White Columns’ ‘zine publication ‘The W.C.’ – which incorporates the entire narrative from ‘The Marque of the Third Stripe. It is available from the gallery, priced at $1.00.
