White Columns

White Room Paul Bulter

White Columns is proud to present the first solo exhibition in New York by the Winnipeg-based artist Paul Butler.

Paul Butler is a part of the constantly evolving, idiosyncratic Winnipeg art scene (itself the subject of a six-page 'City Report' in the March 2006 issue of Frieze.) An ardent investor in the potential of collaboration Butler works simultaneously as an artist, curator (since 1998 he has organized the globally-roving "Collage Party" project), and as the director of Winnipeg's 'othergallery' (www.othergallery.com) which represents the work a newly emergent generation of Canadian artists. Butler's own work predominantly takes the form of collages - often created from the 'left-overs' from "Collage Party" events. Butler's works typically employ images sourced from art magazine advertisements, fashion editorials, and floral displays. At White Columns Butler will present a discrete, formally related group of nine collage works - including a group of 'impossible' bouquets - that invoke a sense of 'collapsed' nature.

Paul Butler lives and works in Winnipeg, Canada. Recent solo exhibitions include: "Readymades", Cream Gallery, Winnipeg; Wynick/Tuck, Toronto; "My Mad Skillz", Plug-In ICA, Winnipeg (catalog); and the Art Gallery of Calgary. He has staged "Collage Party" projects in Montreal, Los Angeles, Dundee, Grand Forks, Vancouver, Halifax, Berlin, New York, Oslo, London, amongst other places. Coinciding with his White Columns' show Butler will stage a "Collage Party" at ZieherSmith gallery, New York (www.ziehersmith.com for more information.)

Paul Butler's 'White Room' has been generously supported by the Manitoba Arts Council; the Canada Council for the Arts; and the Winnipeg Arts Council.
