White Columns

White Columns is New York’s oldest alternative art space, and was founded in 1970 by a community of artists in an atmosphere of experimentation and artistic freedom. The organization’s original vision and spirit remains intact and we continue to support artists whose work is under-recognized and present work on their own terms free from commercial pressure.

In my 21 years as Director and Chief Curator of the organization, I am proud to have expanded the programming to not only include the work of younger emerging artists, but also the work of older artists whose practices have been historically overlooked, artists with disabilities, artists with unconventional histories, and artists with no formal training.

Through our programs we strive to represent something of the complexity of visual culture. Our hope is that each time you visit White Columns, you encounter something that’s substantially different, even unexpected. We would like to thank all of the artists and curators for their invaluable contributions to White Columns’ programs over the past year.

Organizations like White Columns operate in an uncertain and often precarious economy. Our programs would not be possible without the extraordinary support and generosity from the wider art community.

Each and every donation is meaningful and makes a significant impact as a small organization. We hope you consider making a donation to make our future programs possible.

Sincerely,
Matthew Higgs
Director and Chief Curator
